Together, they work to raise funds to support the work of Mennonite Central Committee, as well as local organizations. The event serves as a platform aimed at providing aid and relief to individuals and communities in need. The sale has become a longstanding tradition that not only contributes to charitable efforts but also serves as a unifying force, bringing people together in the name of Christ. Let us be the hands and feet of Jesus! We are thankful and blessed by the continued support of this sale! May the funds raised bring honor and glory to God as we work towards bringing peace, hope, and relief to those in our communities and around the world. MCC is a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God's love and compassion for all through relief, development and peace. In all their programs they are committed to relationships with local partners and churches. As an Anabaptist organization, MCC strives to make peace a part of everything they do. When responding to disasters they work with local groups to distribute resources in ways that minimize conflict. In their development work they plan with community and church groups to make sure the projects meet their needs. And they advocate for policies that will lead to a more peaceful world. You scream! Join us at the Arthur Mennonite Relief Sale to help make an impact locally and around the world. *Members of the American Mennonite Relief Association, which was established under the Mennonite Central Committee to distribute food and other supplies to people in Russion from 1921-1926. (MCC photo)* MCC held its first official meeting on September 27, 1920. On July 27th of that year, 13 church leaders had met in Elkhart, Indiana to talk about how North American Mennonites could respond to the needs of hungry people in the former Soviet Union. MCC's name is a reflection of this coming together of different church groups into one "central" committee. MCC operates Ten Thousand Villages based in Champaign, IL, which purchases crafts from developing world artisans and craftpersons for sale in North America. Overseas they are also heavily involved in development work such as education, health and agriculture, peace and justice issues, relief work, job creation, among other things. Mennonite Central Committee, a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. Their first contact was with Orva Helmuth from Arthur Mennonite Church. With Orva, they spent the day visiting local Amish church leaders, generating a great deal of interest in the Congerville sale. On March 12, 1960 Ura Yoder and Orva Helmuth transported a pickup load of items from Arthur to that first Relief Sale in Congerville. The following year, an even larger pickup load of items went and the sale netted over $5,000. Soon people started wondering if Arthur should have their own Relief Sale. The Arthur area had long been involved in various relief efforts including a yearly meat canning initiative for MCC that had started in 1945. Financial support for MCC began in Arthur in 1948 when one area church, Arthur Mennonite, started taking a monthly relief offering. Interest in a local Relief Sale seemed to be a natural continuation of the relief efforts that had already been taking place in the community for several years. A committee was formed that included representatives form all of the Mennonite churches in the Arthur area and plans were put into place for the first Arthur Mennonite Relief Sale to be held in 1962. That first sale was held on February 17th at the Arthur Sale Barn just north of town and raised approximately $2,000. Items for sale included several quilts and other new items and a bake sale was also held. **in August of each year and is held at the Otto Center** **where hundreds of volunteers work together to raise** **funds for those in need. There is exquisitely handcrafted wood furniture originating from the Arthur area, renowned for its skilled artisans and fine craftsmanship. You'll find an assortment of elegantly framed prints, as well as various household items to cater to everyday needs. Additionally, a wide array of home and garden supplies will be available, offering practical and decorative solutions for indoor and outdoor spaces. You'll be amazed by the extensive assortment of miscellaneous items, ensuring that there is something for every attendee. From a reliable push mower to 163 lbs of premium beef, there is literally something for everyone! The auction officially begins Friday night from 6 p.m. to approximately 9 p.m. and resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and lasting until about 3:30 p.m. At the top of nearly every hour during the general auction, quilts of various sizes and colors are auctioned off. These quilts are often unique and one-of-a-kind, showcasing different quilting techniques and patterns. Most of these quilts are hand-quilted, adding a personal touch and ensuring high quality craftsmanship. They are donated by various groups, such as quilting guilds, charitable organizations, or individual artisans, each contributing their skills and creativity to support the cause of the auction. Details about each quilt including size, color and who has donated the quilt are listed in the Sale Booklet. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, children and their parents gather in the southwest corner of the Otto Center for an auction of their own. This provides a fun and interactive way for kids to participate in bidding for exciting toys and various childrens items. Bidding is usually fast and really fun to watch. To add to the excitement, each participant uses an ice cream paddle bidder number which allows them to use the paddle to receive a free ice cream cone, adding a delightful treat to the event. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a large selection of certificates will be available for bidding on the Silent Auction board, located on the east wall of the main sale area. Attendees can use their bidder numbers to place bids on certificates generously donated for a wide range of items such as oil changes, meals at local restaurants, haircuts, landscaping mulch, and more. After the silent auction concludes, the highest bidder can collect their certificate from the cashier's desk. During the general auction you can use your bidder number to support specific MCC projects around the world. These projects vary from year to year. By sponsoring a half or full table, or by giving to the offering taken during the evening, you are being part of the mission of the Arthur Mennonite Relief Sale. Each year we enjoy a delicious meal together while hearing from a featured speaker or entertainment.
